Every major revolution changed how value was created. The next one is changing what counts as a trustworthy signal.

History tends to remember revolutions by their tools. We talk about stone axes, steam engines, assembly lines, and computers as though technology itself changed the world.

But the deeper transformation was always social.

The Agricultural Revolution did more than invent farming; it expanded human cooperation beyond small tribes. Likewise, the Industrial Revolution didn’t only mechanize production, it made it possible to work, trade, and transact with people we would never meet, while the Information Age connected billions of strangers through networks that collapsed distance and time.

Each revolution created more. Each revolution also created a new trust problem.

The next revolution will be no different.

As AI becomes inextricably intertwined into how we write, decide, create, communicate, and transact, we’re entering what might be called the Post-Human Signal Economy: a world where value comes not from human labor alone, but from the interaction between people, machines, and the signals they generate.

And the defining challenge of this economy won’t be intelligence.

It will be recognition.


Every Revolution Creates More Noise

Once upon a time, trust was relatively simple in small communities when everyone knew everyone. Reputation lived in memory. Identity was social rather than technical.

As societies grew, memory stopped scaling.

Agriculture expanded communities beyond personal familiarity, commerce expanded economic relationships beyond local reputation, and industrialization introduced transactions between complete strangers. Every leap forward required new ways to determine who could be trusted. Documents, institutions, and records all emerged as a result.

In many ways, identity systems have always been civilization’s answer to complexity.

The Post-Human era introduces a similar challenge.

Generative AI dramatically reduces the cost of producing signals. Content can be created in seconds, conversations automated, reviews generated, customer interactions can be delegated to agents. Even entire workflows can happen without meaningful human participation.

For most of history, authentic human effort was scarce. Increasingly, authentic human effort is hard to distinguish from automated output.

The problem now is that information is abundant enough to lose meaning on its own.


Signal Inflation Changes What We Value

Before, we relied on behavioral indicators because generating activity required effort. A visit, a purchase, a registration, an interaction, or a piece of content typically represented real human intent. Now many of those signals can be manufactured on a mass scale. And when supply increases dramatically, scarcity shifts elsewhere.

In the Post-Human Signal Economy, some of the most valuable signals are:

Value moves away from isolated actions and toward context. This is why email-anchored identity is so important. While devices change, usernames change, and platforms rise and fall, email addresses often function as persistent threads connecting years of transactions, communications, relationships, and behaviors.


From Verification to Recognition

As synthetic content, automated agents, and machine-generated interactions become commonplace, many identity signals will lose their explanatory power. A form submission, a device, a phone number, even a convincing conversation might reveal less about the entity behind an interaction than they once did.

What’s more valuable today is continuity.

Email has a unique position in the digital ecosystem because it outlasts the platforms, devices, and channels surrounding it. An email address accumulates history, develops patterns, and becomes attached to transactions, relationships, preferences, behaviors, and reputation over time. The address itself is relatively uninteresting, but the continuity attached to it is where the signal resides.

A synthetic identity can be created in minutes. A trusted identity is built through thousands of interactions distributed across years.

Email-anchored identity is a way to understand whether the identity exhibits the characteristics of persistence, history, and reputation. In an environment where more digital activity is generated, assisted, or mediated by machines, those qualities are harder to manufacture and valuable to recognize.


The Real Difference Between Revolutions

The common assumption about AI is that intelligence will become the most important economic resource.

History suggests otherwise.

Every revolution commoditizes something that was once scarce.

The Agricultural Revolution made food production more abundant. The Industrial Revolution made physical production more abundant. The Information Age made access to knowledge more abundant.

The pattern is consistent—the defining resource of a revolution rarely remains its source of value. Instead, abundance shifts attention elsewhere. If the Post-Human Revolution succeeds in making intelligence abundant, intelligence itself may become less valuable than we expect.

The defining challenge of the Post-Human Signal Economy might not be building smarter machines. It may be deciding what deserves our attention once intelligence is everywhere.

Now the more interesting question is: what will become scarce next?
